Kibra Residents Decry Poor Sanitation Amid Mounting Garbage Crisis

Residents of Kibra have sounded the alarm over deteriorating sanitation standards, blaming poor waste management and inadequate sanitation facilities for worsening living conditions in the constituency.

Piles of uncollected garbage have become a common sight across markets and neighborhoods, with many residents fearing an outbreak of diseases. In several areas, overflowing drainage systems and clogged sewer lines have left families exposed to unsanitary environments.

“The garbage pile next to my stall is unbearable. Customers complain about the stench, and I fear for our health, especially with children around,” lamented Robert Wanga, a fish vendor.

Local entrepreneurs say the situation is hurting businesses, while community leaders and youth groups have accused the Nairobi County Government of neglect. They argue that despite paying taxes and market fees, essential services have not improved.

“We’ve endured this for three years with little to no action from the current administration,” said carpenter Zachary Ouma Keya.

Health experts warn that the crisis could escalate into a full-blown public health emergency if not addressed urgently. They point to rising cases of waterborne diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which could overwhelm already strained health facilities.

Residents are now appealing to Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration and other stakeholders to act swiftly by enhancing garbage collection services and providing proper sanitation infrastructure to safeguard public health.
