Kalonzo-Muthama Meeting Rattles Opposition

Has Kalonzo Musyoka opened a new political door to William Ruto’s camp?

That is the question reverberating through opposition circles after the Wiper leader held a private meeting with former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, the founding chairman of President William Ruto’s UDA party.

The last week meeting has unsettled sections of Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP and Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi, with allies of the two accusing Kalonzo of softening his stance towards Ruto and opening channels to the President’s political camp.

Kalonzo and Muthama met on Thursday evening, October 1, against the backdrop of intense opposition manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Muthama is closely associated with Ruto’s inner circle from Ukambani, while Kalonzo remains one of the leading opposition figures and a central player in 2027.

Kalonzo’s recent description of Ruto as his “brother” has only added fuel to the speculation.

The Wiper leader was however quick to clarify the remark was not an endorsement of the President, but a reference to their shared Kenyan and Christian identity.

Muthama has also moved to clarify the meeting, pushing back against what he called “a lot of exaggerated stories”.

In his statement, Muthama described Kalonzo as his “brother and longtime political friend” and said they had consulted on national issues, exchanged views on the current situation and discussed the way forward on matters affecting Kenya and its people.
