How to Get a Business Permit in Nairobi County

Starting a business in Nairobi County comes with the legal requirement of obtaining a business permit, commonly referred to as a Unified Business Permit (UBP).

This permit is issued by the Nairobi City County Government and is mandatory for any entrepreneur or company wishing to operate within the city. The permit not only legalizes your operations but also helps maintain standards of business practice and ensures compliance with county regulations.

The first step in acquiring a business permit is gathering the necessary documents. These include a duly completed business permit application form, a copy of your certificate of incorporation or business name registration (from eCitizen), your Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) PIN certificate, and a copy of your national ID or passport if you are a foreign national. These documents verify the identity and legitimacy of your business and its owners.

Once your documents are ready, you must submit your application at the Trade Licensing Department located at City Hall Annexe or apply through the Nairobi County eServices portal. Here, county officers will verify your application and assess the fees based on several factors: the size and type of your business, the number of employees, its physical location, and whether additional licenses, such as fire clearance, health certification, or advertising permits, are required.

After assessment, you will receive an invoice with the amount payable. Payment is made at the cash office or through authorized digital payment methods.

The cost of acquiring a business permit varies depending on your business category but typically ranges from KSh 15,000 to KSh 24,000, including additional licenses if needed. Upon payment, you will receive your Unified Business Permit, either immediately or within a few hours.

Renewals of business permits are done annually, and the process is even more streamlined for returning businesses, especially if done online. Nairobi County has made it easier through digital platforms that allow for quicker processing, saving entrepreneurs time and resources.

Generally, getting a business permit in Nairobi is a fairly straightforward process if you have the right documents and follow the required steps.

It ensures that your business operates within the legal framework and gives you access to formal opportunities such as tenders, loans, and partnerships. Whether you are starting a small kiosk or launching a medium-sized enterprise, securing a business permit is an essential step toward building a compliant and credible business in Kenya’s capital.
