In a recent interview former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stunned many Kenyans by alleging that President William Ruto is worth $31 billion — roughly Ksh 4.1 trillion — a figure that would make him richer than Africa’s wealthiest man, Nigerian industrialist Aliko Dangote whose estimated net worth stands at $23.9 billion (Ksh 3.4 trillion).
“President Ruto is worth Kshs. 4 Trillion,” Gachagua said casually during the interview.
The statement, which was neither challenged nor substantiated, sparked confusion and disbelief across the country.
Financial experts and members of the public quickly questioned the credibility of the statement. “It’s either a joke or he knows something the rest of the world doesn’t know,” said a Nairobi-based economist. “Even the Kenyan national budget sits at about Ksh 4.2 trillion. If the President personally has nearly that much, it raises serious questions.”
Online, Kenyans were less forgiving. “Gachagua should go slow on the Muratina,” one X user joked. Others demanded transparency: “If Ruto is worth Ksh 4.1 trillion, let him publish his wealth declaration. We can’t be taxed to the bone while our leaders claim trillionaire status.”
The former DP’s comment adds to a growing list of contradictory or exaggerated public statements attributed to him which contradicts the brand he has invested in heavily of a Truthful Man.
Now the pressure is on as Kenyans demand that leaders, including Gachagua, be accountable and honest when speaking to Kenyans to avoid confusion and unnecessary incitement.
The question that is gradually emerging is could Rigathi Gachagua be a dishonest man, unlike what he claims.
