Kalonzo allies claim Rigathi has backed him for 2027 race
Kalonzo Musyoka and his team have declared Rigathi Gachagua has chosen Kalonzo as the opposition presidential candidate to face President William Ruto in 2027.
Other reports are that President Uhuru Kenyatta has thrown his weight behind a presidential ticket comprising former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and the Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka
From a personal perspective for him, Kalonzo Musyoka has to get the ticket to have a chance for the presidency because he is 73 years old and 2032 is out of the way for him.
Kalonzo has spent 40 of those years of his life in the Kenya governments working with the presidents from Moi to Kibaki and he has big difficulties pointing to any one thing he did for Kenyans including his own constituents at home. That is Kalonzo for Kenyans in 2027.
Once he becomes the president, Kalonzo Musyoka can sort all that out doing something for Kenyans and so far he does not know what that something will be. Good luck with that if you are a Kenyan voter looking for a real agenda for development to benefit the citizens.
Here is the deal for Uhuru Kenyatta and others, if and that is a big if, Gachagua picks Kalonzo to run as the presidential candidate for the opposition, Gachagua will not allow Matiang’i to be the DP candidate because he is not a Kikuyu as simple as that. There is no need to twist around looking for excuses.
Gachagua will not allow a presidential ticket without a Kikuyu person in there. Full stop.
Nobody knows what happens to the United Opposition after Kalonzo is lucky enough to be picked by Gachagua including Kalonzo himself. The only person who knows what happens in all the chaos that will follow is Rigathi Gachagua himself because he knows he will be in charge of everything whichever way it goes. Good, bad or terrible.
Where does Martha Karua go after Gachagua nominates Kalonzo Musyoka for the presidency? Only Martha Karua knows that now.
The likes of Edwin Sifuna and his Linda team will not even be in the math or anywhere on the table for the Gachagua nominations in terms of who runs for which seat against the William Ruto and Oburu Oginga team.
The Linda Mwanainchi team is only relevant to Gachagua as long as they appear to be causing division in ODM but other than that Gachagua will not nominate any of them anywhere in the opposition ticket for 2027. That is how harsh politics can be in Kenya. You can be rolled like a dice when convenient and nobody cares where you fall after that.
Gachagua will pick which candidates to run for which key positions like the Deputy President, Nairobi Governor and Nairobi Senator. That is all up to Gachagua and all the dancing around the country will not change anything. If Martha Karua chooses to go for the Nairobi Governor job, Gachagua will support her or else he will pick one of his boys in Nairobi for governor.
It would be great to have Martha Karua as Nairobi Governor because Nairobi is the second country in Kenya by population and budget and its national and international importance to Kenya is a big part of our national stature as a country.
Martha Karua as governor could be a great gift to the country and to Nairobi residents specifically and Kenyans should urge Martha Karua to take the second most important job in the country which is to be the governor of Nairobi County.
Karua: No consensus yet on 2027 opposition presidential candidate
PLP party leader Martha Karua has dismissed claims that the united opposition has settled on a single presidential candidate to face William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, insisting that no agreement has been reached on either the candidate or the selection process.
Speaking on Sunday, July 5, 2026, during Family Day celebrations at St. James Catholic Church in Difathas, Mwea, Kirinyaga County, Karua said opposition leaders are yet to agree on the rules and method that will be used to identify one presidential candidate.
Without naming anyone directly, Karua cautioned some opposition leaders against making unilateral declarations that could undermine the coalition’s unity.
“We have not agreed on the criteria or the process of selecting our presidential candidate. Anyone speaking as though a decision has already been made is misleading Kenyans,” Karua said.
Gachagua is now running the United Opposition from his Wamunyoro State House which is the headquarters of the United Opposition team.
I know even the goats are getting stressed but that is another story.
During the week, Gachagua announced that the United Opposition will pick their presidential candidate just before the deadline for nominations which is May 15, 2027.
Gachagua is telling the opposition that he will give their candidate two months to campaign for the presidency because that is what is convenient for him and not what is helpful for the United Opposition team which he controls and everybody there has to obey him.
Obviously Gachagua wants to milk the judicial system on his impeachment case as much as he could and hopes that gives him enough time to be cleared by the Court of Appeal and/or the Supreme Court.
People say William Ruto controls the courts and if that is true William Ruto should ask the Court of Appeal to clear Gachagua from the impeachment so that Ruto faces Gachagua at the polls in 2027 which would mean President Ruto would never need to campaign at all to win the election.
The bigger nightmare for the United Opposition team is what to do with Rigathi Gachagua killing them from all sides while controlling everything from Wamunyoro. That is their problem to deal with. Good Luck.
