Lupita Nyong’o to Play Dual Roles in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Adaptation

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o has been cast in dual roles for Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, taking on the parts of both Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra.

The casting represents a significant moment for the production, as Nyong’o will portray Helen of Troy, a character immortalized in Greek mythology as “the most beautiful woman in the world” and famously described as “the face that launched a thousand ships.” The role was previously brought to screen by Diane Kruger in Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 film Troy.

In addition to Helen, Nyong’o will also embody Clytemnestra, Helen’s sister and a pivotal figure in Greek tragedy, known for her complex role in the aftermath of the Trojan War.

Nolan’s The Odyssey marks another ambitious project from the visionary director, who continues to push boundaries in epic filmmaking. The dual casting of Nyong’o showcases both her versatility as an actress and the production’s commitment to bold creative choices.

The casting also positions the film favorably regarding Academy Award eligibility standards. To qualify for Best Picture consideration, films must meet at least two of four inclusion standards established by the Academy.

These standards address representation both on-screen and behind the scenes, including requirements for diverse casting in major roles, representation among creative leadership, industry training opportunities for underrepresented groups, and diversity in studio marketing and distribution leadership.

With Nyong’o, a Kenyan actress, in a major role, the production meets the first standard, which requires either one lead actor from an underrepresented racial or ethnic group, 30% of smaller roles from such groups, or a story centered on underrepresented communities.

The Odyssey opens in movie theaters on July 17.
