Karua Breaks Ranks with United Opposition, Launches Independent Campaigns

Martha Karua has officially kicked off solo campaigns under her People’s Liberation Party (PLP), breaking away from the United Opposition’s joint activities after weeks of absence.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 23, 2026, PLP said its party leader’s move is a principled stand rooted in integrity and that her leadership remains distinct and independent from the current coalition she is in.

“The people of Kirinyaga do not need confusion to recognize leadership, they only need clarity. Her direction draws a clear line between substance and illusion,” the statement read in part.

PLP lauded Karua as a leader defined by consistency and service, asserting that her track record speaks without embellishment.

While other opposition figures have been holding joint rallies across the country, Karua has notably stayed away, choosing instead to consolidate her base independently.

Both Karua and Fred Matiang’i, the Jubilee Party flagbearer, skipped the united opposition Ukambani rallies this week. There has been brewing tension between the Jubilee Party and Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP over the Olkalou by-election.

“In a time where leadership is often diluted, hers remains defined, clear, accountable, and grounded in service,” PLP added.

Karua’s decision to intensify solo mobilisation efforts is expected to cause more friction in the united opposition, especially in Mt Kenya, where the party is fighting for influence, alongside Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP and Jubilee Party.

The three parties have vowed to field a candidate in the upcoming Olkalou byelection.
