The government has confirmed that Kenyans applying for smart driving licences can now submit their biometric data through 15 Huduma Centres across the country.
In a statement, Huduma Kenya announced that the arrangement follows a partnership with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA). The selected Huduma Centres include GPO (Nairobi), Kibra, Mombasa, Nyeri, Garissa, Kisumu, Machakos, Embu, Meru, Kakamega, Eldoret, Thika, Kericho, Nakuru, and Kisii.
This new move allows drivers to provide their biometrics, including fingerprints, digital photographs, and a signature, at the centres before receiving the licences. “Smart Driving Licence biometric services are now available at select Huduma Centres. Get it now,” Huduma Kenya stated.
The smart driving licence, which replaced the old paper-based document, is a chip-enabled plastic card that enhances security and efficiency. The card is linked to NTSA’s Transport Integrated Management System (TIMS), which allows real-time updating of driver records.
To acquire one, applicants must first register through the NTSA TIMS portal and book a physical appointment at a Huduma Centre for biometrics. Once processed, the card can be collected at NTSA offices or Huduma Centres.
The announcement comes just days after Huduma Kenya urged citizens to collect their already processed documents from centres countrywide. As of September 10, the agency confirmed that 57,444 driving licences, 22,524 birth certificates, and 82,506 identification cards were ready for collection.
According to Huduma Kenya, processing times remain relatively short, with identification cards and birth certificates taking around two weeks, while a smart driving licence is processed in about five days.
“Your government documents are ready for collection. Visit any of our 59 Huduma Centres nationwide and pick them today,” Huduma Kenya said in its statement.
