The family of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu, who was brutally murdered in broad daylight, has demanded justice as they mourn the sudden loss of their loved one.
Speaking from their home in Makueni County on Wednesday, September 10, the family called for speedy investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Led by his brother James Maluki, the family urged the government to provide answers to the killing, which took place on Tuesday, September 9, along Magadi Road. Maluki described Mbobu, the third-born in a family of 12 siblings, as the family’s pillar and a man who related well with everyone.
According to reports, unidentified attackers trailed Mbobu’s vehicle before firing five bullets through his window, killing him instantly.
“We are demanding justice over our loved one’s death. Mbobu had no issues with anyone and was a professional who conducted himself well. We do not know why someone would want him dead,” Maluki stated.
“Everyone has freedom of movement and speech. This killing sends the wrong message to professionals, as it means they cannot conduct themselves without looking over their shoulders all the time,” he added.
On the morning of his death, Mbobu reported to his Nairobi CBD office at 5 a.m. as was his routine. He later proceeded to prayers at the Holy Family Basilica at around 6:50 a.m.
Workers at his office building recalled noticing a change in his mood. “Normally, he is very happy and jovial, but on that day, I noticed he was not his usual self. He greeted me, but I could tell something was amiss,” said a security guard.
Later that evening, Mbobu is said to have held a meeting with unknown individuals at a city hotel before attending another engagement within the CBD. He then drove toward Lang’ata Road, branching into Magadi Road to connect to Gataka Road via the Catholic University of Eastern Africa Road.
It was at this point that two gunmen on a motorcycle struck, ambushing him during a traffic snarl-up and fatally shooting him.
Following the murder, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) issued a statement demanding swift investigations and accountability from security agencies.
“The Law Society of Kenya expresses profound grief and concern following the brutal gunning down of Mr. Kyalo Mbobu, a reputable Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a resounding three decades of practice. This most unfortunate occurrence marks a sad day for the legal profession and for the entire country,” LSK President Faith Odhiambo said.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed it had launched an inquiry, visiting the crime scene near Galleria Brookside, conducting forensic analysis on Mbobu’s vehicle, and collecting evidence.
