Why Gachagua’s Tribal Project Was a Threat to Kenya’s Future

Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment was not a betrayal — it was a necessary correction. As Deputy President, he abandoned the national vision for a dangerous mission: building a tribal political kingdom centered on Mt. Kenya, for his personal benefit.

Instead of using his position to unite the country, Gachagua openly claimed Mt. Kenya was the “biggest shareholder” in government, insisting it must be served first. This was not leadership — it was entitlement. It sent a dangerous signal to other regions: that some Kenyans mattered more than others. His rhetoric wasn’t just divisive, it was reckless, alienating the rest of the country and creating unnecessary tension in a nation still healing from ethnic wounds.

He didn’t stop at words. He surrounded himself with a network of loyalists whose loyalty was based not on merit or shared national ideals, but on tribal allegiance. His public rallies and church meetings often turned into political declarations of Mt. Kenya supremacy, eroding public trust and undermining the government he served in.

The presidency is not a playground for regional supremacy. Kenya is a nation of many tribes, but one destiny. No leader should hold the country hostage to their home region’s demands. The decision to impeach Gachagua was not about punishing ambition — it was about preserving the soul of the nation.

His removal from office created room for more inclusive leadership from Mt. Kenya — one that understands Kenya is not 42 nations, but one republic. Gachagua’s plan to build an ethnic kingdom collapsed under its own selfish weight. His impeachment was not a tragedy — it was a rescue mission for national unity.

Kenyans deserve leadership that brings us together, not one that builds kingdoms of exclusion.
