Viral Video Exposes British Soldiers’ Violence Against Kenyan Women

A Kenyan woman has gone viral on social media with a bold idea to help protect local women in Nanyuki.

The sex shop owner recorded a message directed at British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) soldiers, offering to supply them with sex toys and other adult intimate products, as an alternative to unlawfully engaging with local women.

She urges them to buy from her stock instead of harassing or abusing Kenyan women. A first glance at the video might look funny, but the real story behind her video is rather serious and disheartening.

For many years, British soldiers from the BATUK in Nanyuki have faced serious accusations of sexual crimes, including rape, assault, and leaving children without support. Human Rights groups have documented hundreds of such allegations historically. These acts have hurt many families and destroyed trust between the soldiers and local people.

The 2012 murder of Agnes Wanjiru, a 21-year-old Kenyan woman who was a hairdresser and mother, last seen with British soldiers from the Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment at the Lions Court Hotel in Nanyuki, is the worst of such many cases.

Her body was found months later in a septic tank on the hotel grounds, with evidence of stabbing and other injuries. A Kenyan inquest ruled it an unlawful killing by one or more British soldiers.  The case shocked Kenya and led to calls for justice.

In November 2025, Kenya’s parliamentary released a major 94-page report accusing BATUK of a “disturbing trend” of sexual misconduct, human rights violations, environmental damage like unexploded ordnance, waste dumping and impunity; often dismissing complaints or mishandling cases. The report highlighted failures in accountability and cooperation from the British side.

The woman in the viral video clearly demonstrates and displays her products in a conscious effort to reduce sexual harassment, assault, and related risks to Kenyan women, emphasizing consent. “Sex must always be consensual”, she explains in her video.

She suggested her toys can give soldiers a safe, private way to handle their urges, possibly lowering the risks of unwanted pregnancies as well as violence against innocent women and girls.

Many Kenyans support her brave move for highlighting the issue. Discussions on social media around her viral video throws more light on conversations in Kenya, especially in Nanyuki, pointing at frustrations at the British military presence in this area. Kenyans online believe this unusual approach could reduce harm and make their communities safer for women.
