The Senate Got It Right on Gachagua’s Impeachment. His Guilt Speaks for Itself

When the Senate voted 53–14 to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the verdict split opinion and sparked accusations of political witch-hunt. Yet today, with hindsight’s unforgiving clarity, the ruling reads less like partisanship and more like prophecy.

Four Strikes, One Fall
Senators found Gachagua guilty on four explosive charges — any one of which was enough to remove him. He was convicted of:
1. Undermining national unity through divisive tribal rhetoric.
2. Breaching the oath of office, betraying the duty to protect cohesion.
3. Inciteful public utterances, fanning hostility and fear.
4. Conduct unbecoming, a standard of behavior far below the dignity of his station.

Prophecy Fulfilled
Critics cried foul at the time, but Gachagua’s post-impeachment conduct has vindicated the Senate. Stripped of power, he has doubled down on ethnic mobilization, heckled at funerals amid chaos, and condemned for sowing division where unity was demanded. His words continue to inflame tensions, proving the charges were not theoretical but a reflection of his true political DNA.

The Dirty Process
The impeachment itself was hardly pure. Whispers of bribes, extortion demands, and “no clean hands” haunted the corridors of Parliament. President Ruto even railed against Sh150 million shakedowns tied to the process. Yet, despite the swamp, one fact remains indisputable: Gachagua’s own record justified his fall.

History’s Judgment
The Senate may not have emerged spotless, but its decision stands tall against the test of time. Kenya’s upper house drew clear lines between rhetoric and responsibility, oath and betrayal. And as Gachagua now threatens comebacks and “mega movements,” his desperation only reinforces the truth: the axe fell where it was deserved.

Kenya dodged a bullet. The scar he left remains a warning.
