Senator Khalwale De-Whipped

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has been removed from his position as the Senate Majority Whip.

Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced the decision during a Senate sitting on Tuesday afternoon, December 2, 2025. The Kenya Kwanza Alliance has appointed Bungoma Senator Wafula Wakoli as the new Senate Majority Whip.

“A resolution was passed to remove Senate Majority Whip Senator Dr. Boni Khalwale CBS, MP, in accordance with Standing Order 225. The minutes further indicate that the majority party elected Senator David Wafula Wakoli, MP, to serve as the new Senate Majority Whip in his place,” Kingi said.

“Standing Order 228 provides that the Speaker, upon receipt of such a decision, shall verify the correspondence and communicate it to the Senate within three sitting days. In this respect, I have verified the correspondence received and hereby confirm that the majority party has effected a change in the office of the Senate Majority Whip. The new officeholder, with immediate effect, is Senator David Wafulla Wakoli, MP.”

The move came after Khalwale, alongside Eugene Wamalwa and George Natembeya, supported Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Seth Panyako in the Malava by-election, rather than backing the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate David Ndakwa. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei criticised Khalwale’s actions.

“Senator Bonnie Khalwale of Kakamega County must pay for his political sins for challenging his sponsoring UDA party in the recent Malava constituency by-elections by campaigning against our candidate. His contemptuous remarks against the UDA Party/Kenya Kwanza administration cannot go unpunished,” Cherargei said in a statement released on December 2.

Khalwale, who hinted at launching his own party, the United Patriotic Front (UPF), has been positioning himself politically ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race. During the Malava campaigns, he publicly supported DAP-K candidates and told Eugene Wamalwa that he fully backed the united opposition.

Eugene Wamalwa welcomed Khalwale to DAP-K, saying:

“From the look of things, his UDA party does not want him and might soon de-whip him for defying party rules. DAP-K is the place to be,” Wamalwa added, hinting at the possibility of giving Khalwale the role previously held by Ayub Savula as Deputy Party Leader.
