Gachagua’s “Wantam” Slogan Is a Mask for Greed and Division

Rigathi Gachagua has mastered the art of political theatre. Behind his catchy “Wantam” (one term) slogan lies not a vision for Kenya’s unity or prosperity, but a cynical tool to manipulate emotions, silence critics, and shield himself from accountability.

Since his rise to prominence, Gachagua has styled himself as the champion of the people. Yet, when examined closely, his actions tell a different story.

Instead of using his platform to heal divisions, he has fanned the flames of tribalism, pitting regions against each other whenever it serves his political ambitions. His speeches often disguise this divisive rhetoric under the banner of “telling the truth,” but it is truth weaponized to divide, not unite.

Beyond his toxic politics, there is the question of money and power. Gachagua has been repeatedly accused of enriching himself at the expense of the very people he claims to defend.

Party funds, public coffers, and questionable fundraising initiatives have been linked to his accumulation of vast tracts of land and luxury hotel investments. These are not the actions of a selfless leader—they are the signs of a man building a personal empire under the cover of political activism.

Most telling, however, is his resistance to being held accountable. Instead of engaging with tough questions or providing transparent answers, he waves the “Wantam” banner like a shield, painting any scrutiny as political persecution. This is not leadership—it is evasion.

Kenyans deserve leaders who are driven by service, not self-preservation. The “Wantam” clarion may sound catchy, but beneath its rhythm is the same old song of tribal politics, greed, and manipulation. The sooner we see through it, the sooner we can focus on leaders who value accountability, unity, and real progress.
