Oburu Oginga Breaks Silence on Odinga Family Rift After Ida’s UNEP Appointment

ODM party leader and Odinga family patriarch Oburu Oginga has addressed growing speculation over internal tensions within the Odinga family, following President William Ruto’s appointment of Mama Ida Odinga as Kenya’s Ambassador to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The appointment, announced on Friday, sparked widespread debate and reports of unease within the influential political family, with some members allegedly expressing differing views on the move’s political implications.

Speaking in an interview on Saturday, Oburu moved to calm the public and reassure family members that the situation was under control. He dismissed claims of a deepening rift, describing the reported divisions as temporary and resolvable.

“There is no cause for alarm,” Oburu said, emphasizing that the family remained united despite the recent developments. He added that discussions were underway to address any misunderstandings and reaffirm the family’s shared values and commitment to public service.

”Young people sometimes express divergent views, I will talk to them. They have a lot of time, some of us are just holding for them and we love them. They’re my children and I cannot utter anything against them. If they want any advice, I’m there for them. The internal family conversation, as I said, are issues which are important to resolve and I’m equal to the task. I have called a meeting on 1st February where we are going to deal with those issues.”

Oburu, who has long been regarded as the elder statesman of the Odinga family, underscored the importance of dialogue and mutual respect in maintaining unity. He expressed confidence that the upcoming family consultations would restore harmony and put an end to speculation about internal discord.

The Odinga family, one of Kenya’s most prominent political dynasties, has played a central role in the country’s political landscape for decades. The latest developments come at a time of shifting alliances and renewed political realignments ahead of the next general election.
