A Chuka University student, John Tingoi, has earned international recognition after beating nearly 89,000 contestants worldwide to secure a spot in the global finals of the International Quant Championship (IQC) 2025.
The IQC is a prestigious global, team-based quantitative finance modelling competition that has been running since March. Over a span of seven months, participants are grouped into teams and tasked with applying quantitative analysis to data and financial markets simulations to accumulate points. Quants, as the participants are called, use mathematics, coding, and statistics to predict financial market behavior, build models for banks and hedge funds, and manage risks.
Tingoi, a student in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Chuka University, emerged as one of the top contestants after outperforming over 9,000 competitors in Kenya and nearly 80,000 others worldwide. His win at the Kenya National Finals secured him a place among the 12 best participants globally.
The university administration hailed Tingoi’s success as a “landmark achievement” that not only highlights his talent but also elevates Chuka University’s standing in science, technology, and innovation. “This landmark achievement cements the University’s reputation in science, technology, and innovation, as the institution celebrates one of its brightest minds flying the national and university flag globally,” the institution said in a statement.
Tingoi will now represent Kenya at the Singapore International Quant Championship Finals, scheduled for September 29 and 30. Finalists stand a chance to win substantial cash prizes and potential employment opportunities. Regional and national winners receive Ksh390,000 ($3,000), while international winners earn up to Ksh2.6 million ($20,000). The first and second runners-up receive Ksh1.5 million ($12,000) and Ksh1 million ($8,000), respectively.
Tingoi’s achievement has placed both himself and Chuka University firmly in the global spotlight.
