Nightmares had me resign from my mortuary attendant job

6 mins read

I liked my job as a mortuary attendant at the Nairobi City mortuary. It was the best occupation and something I was longing for since I was a small kid.

Each time in class when the teacher asked us what was our favorite jobs were, some said they wanted to be teachers, engineers, lawyers, doctors, and surgeons. However, when I said I wanted to be a mortuary attendant, the entire class would burst into uncontrollable laughter. My teacher would even question me and even ask if really I was okay.

I insisted being a mortuary attendant was my call. I went to campus and luckily that was what I studied. Other students sidelined me in school and they thought I was not normal doing such a course. Some even associated me with the dead. They never saw this as just the same field as theirs. Some mocked me by saying I was truly a walking dead, little did they know the ambition I had in being a mortuary attendant.

I graduated after four years of studying and I got a job at the Nairobi City mortuary as a morgue attendant. My first experience was not that friendly considering it was my first time to see so many bodies lying in fridges and not just bodies but dead bodies.

There were bodies of handsome men of all sizes. Curvy women who were dead were even more. At times I wondered what made a woman or a man boast around when they were alive and when they die they were just but useless. The city mortuary was specifically meant for people who had perished from fatal accidents in the city, so one can picture how the morgue looked like.

At times a body was brought without a head, sometimes a body with all body parts broken and it was the duty of the mortuary attendant to wash, dress and preserve it, for money was really paid in our accounts monthly and we had no excuses of not doing our job.

I did the job for 10 years. When my grandmother died in a road accident and was surprisingly brought to the mortuary for her body to be prepared for burial, I was the one to undertake that. I wanted no one to know it was my grandmother.

But this was the only thing that made me resign from the job. Some fellow mortuary attendant would eat by the rooms. Others would neither masks nor gloves while eating. When I asked them if it was odd to behave in that manner they said that everyone would die hence it was not a big deal to behave that way.

A few months after I resigned, I was not able to sleep in peace at my place. Each moment my wife turned the lights off, I would see caskets and dead people. Some of whom I attended at the mortuary, laughing and talking. I was even choked some time and breathing became a problem.

Life became more difficult when I shared my predicaments with friends who in turn said I was a bhang addict and those were only hallucinations. The nightmares became more and more as days went by. The only solution to tame them was by staying awake all night, which was a difficult task to do since the body needed rest.

Luckily, I got a new job. But what was still disturbing me were the nightmares. I tried prayers and medication but all was in vain. Some people would tell me to take much alcohol, but whenever I was drunk, I would even talk with the dead people I met in the nightmares. It was all in vain.

After some time, I met James whom I shared my experience. He said he had a solution and it was to visit Kiwanga Doctors in Kericho County. The next morning I went to Kericho to see the herbalists and was attended to. On returning home after three days, I experienced no nightmares and began sleeping in peace like a little kid. Kiwanga Doctors really helped me.
